Las herramientas con que nos comunicamos deciden en silencio qué puede decirse y quién puede decirlo. MediaFranca cuidará las que responden ante las personas: abiertas, legibles, reparables; de nadie en particular y de todos. The tools we communicate with quietly decide what can be said and who gets to say it. MediaFranca will care for those that answer to people: open, legible, repairable; owned by no one in particular and by everyone.
MediaFranca será un modo de cuidar. Reunirá herramientas de lenguaje abierto —pictogramas, textos, esquemas, grafos— y se hará cargo de que sigan existiendo: financiarlas, mantenerlas, vigilar que permanezcan abiertas y que respondan ante quienes las usan. No las guardará: las sostendrá. MediaFranca will be a way of caring. It will gather open-language tools —pictograms, texts, schemas, graphs— and take on the work of keeping them alive: funding them, maintaining them, watching that they stay open and answer to the people who use them. It will not store them: it will hold them up.
Detrás de cada herramienta hay una decisión sobre qué es una persona. Un pictograma que no se puede editar decide por quien lo usa. Un texto que sólo vive dentro de una plataforma decide quién podrá leerlo. MediaFranca existirá para tomar esas decisiones a la vista, con principios escritos y revisables, en lugar de dejarlas al arbitrio de quien tenga el servidor. Es todavía una iniciativa en formación, y no tiene apuro en dejar de serlo. Behind every tool there is a decision about what a person is. A pictogram that cannot be edited decides on behalf of whoever uses it. A text that lives only inside a platform decides who will get to read it. MediaFranca will exist to make those decisions in the open, with written and revisable principles, rather than leaving them to whoever owns the server. It is still an initiative in formation, and it is in no hurry to stop being one.
La inteligencia artificial concentra hoy un poder sin precedentes, y sin embargo la pregunta por la dignidad de la persona sigue casi ausente del debate público.1 Se discute qué puede hacer la tecnología; casi nunca a quién sirve, quién la gobierna, o qué reduce a las personas a función, dato o rendimiento. Artificial intelligence now concentrates unprecedented power, and yet the question of human dignity remains almost absent from public debate.1 We discuss what technology can do; almost never whom it serves, who governs it, or what reduces people to function, data or performance.
La tecnología no es neutral: lleva el rostro de quien la concibe, la financia y la gobierna. Por eso quién la custodia importa tanto como lo que hace. Imaginamos herramientas que amplíen lo que somos capaces de hacer, puedan comprenderse y repararse, y respondan ante las comunidades que las usan. Technology is not neutral: it bears the face of those who conceive, fund and govern it. That is why who stewards it matters as much as what it does. We imagine tools that widen what we are capable of, can be understood and repaired, and answer to the communities that use them.
Trabajaremos por domesticar la tecnología: volverla habitable, auditable y culturalmente propia, desde Chile y Latinoamérica hacia el mundo.5 We will work to domesticate technology: to make it habitable, auditable and culturally our own, from Chile and Latin America towards the world.5
MediaFranca custodiará proyectos de lenguaje abierto —software, estándares, esquemas y contenidos— y, sobre todo, definirá las reglas para hacerlo. Será un sistema de gobernanza: una comunidad de expertos y de personas usuarias que decide, de cara al público, qué es un bien público digital4 y cómo se sostiene en el tiempo. MediaFranca will steward open-language projects —software, standards, schemas and content— and, above all, define the rules for doing so. It will be a governance system: a community of experts and users that decides, in public, what a digital public good is4 and how it is sustained over time.
Custodiar no será archivar. Significará financiar y mantener el desarrollo, vigilar los estándares, proteger los comunes de la apropiación privada y garantizar que el conocimiento circule libremente. La custodia será activa, o no será. Stewardship will not mean archiving. It will mean funding and maintaining development, watching over standards, protecting the commons from private appropriation and ensuring knowledge circulates freely. Stewardship will be active, or it will not be at all.
La misión operará en tres círculos concéntricos. Cada uno contiene y da sentido al siguiente: la convivencialidad es el horizonte, el lenguaje abierto es el medio, y la accesibilidad cognitiva es el dominio donde todo se encarna. The mission will operate in three concentric circles. Each contains and gives meaning to the next: conviviality is the horizon, open language is the medium, and cognitive accessibility is the domain where all of it is embodied.
Estos principios no serán decoración: serán el criterio con que se admita un proyecto, se resuelva un conflicto y se rinda cuenta. Vienen de una convicción anterior —el Manifiesto para el Diseño de Interacción en un Tiempo que se Despliega (2025), que sostiene que el Diseño configura cómo nos relacionamos entre nosotros a través de la tecnología, y que esa relación nunca es neutral—5 y se escribirán y revisarán en comunidad como el manifiesto de MediaFranca. These principles will not be decoration: they will be the criterion by which a project is admitted, a conflict resolved and accountability given. They come from an earlier conviction —the Manifesto for Interaction Design in an Unfolding Time (2025), which holds that design shapes how we relate to one another through technology, and that this relation is never neutral—5 and they will be written and revised in community as MediaFranca's manifesto.

MediaFranca is still an initiative in formation: those who constitute it will define its legal form, its governance and its first commitments. So it matters less how many we are than who.

It will be sustained by those who choose to steward, in common, what should not be left in a few hands.
